Always analyze things critically and question the status quo. They were best at one time but possibly not now. So, what are some of the business lessons learned from Michael Lewis, Billy Beane and Moneyball? Baseball had accumulated over a 150 years of subjective, flawed and outdated theories of evaluating and assessing talent. The Oakland A’s became a market-efficient team in an inefficient sport.

The A’s were able to successfully compete with the large-market teams not by outspending them, but by creating a new economic approach, a new business model. This new economic approach allowed the Oakland A’s, a small-market team with the smallest budget in professional baseball, to successfully compete with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and other large-market, large budget teams with annual budgets five-times that of the A’s. New statistical analysis (on-base percentage, slugging percentage to name a few) were emphasized by Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s in valuing players. The central premise of Moneyball is that the collective wisdom of baseball insiders (players, managers, coaches, scouts and front office management) is subjective, flawed and inefficient. Of course it was made into a popular, award-winning movie in 2011 starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. I am an avid reader and it is my favorite book of all time. Moneyball is an entertaining and enlightening true story about the transformation of professional baseball by a new economic approach to the game made popular by Billy Beane, General Manager of the Oakland Athletics. So has Michael Lewis, who wrote the book Moneyball which was first published in 2003. It has taught me many lessons that I have applied to my professional life. So baseball has been very good to me and my family.īaseball has also been good to me as a business professional. He has had many great baseball experiences throughout his young life and for that I am grateful. Christopher had the opportunity to compete against Dominican professionals and amateurs. His college team had the opportunity to tour the Dominican Republic. He was an accomplished high school player who received a Division 1 college baseball scholarship.

I was a below average player but a good student of the game. I played baseball recreationally in my younger days.
